Long Exposure Photographs of Brittany – Between Stillness and Motion

25 December 2022   –    Categorie:    –    Sebastien Desnoulez

A new way to see the Breton coastline. Long exposure photography reveals a poetic and timeless dimension of Brittany’s landscapes. By slowing down time with multi-minute exposures, the camera transforms waves and clouds into silky textures, offering a calm vision of the coast, somewhere between abstraction and reality.

Photographing Brittany Differently

From the famous Ploumanac’h lighthouse to the majestic rocks of Plougrescant, passing through the diving board of Saint-Quay-Portrieux’s seawater pool and the mysterious harbor of Gwin Zegal, each shot enhances these key sites of the coastal landscape by playing with the contrast between movement and stillness.

The motion blur effects created by moving waves and stretched skies bring a new dimension to these landscapes, where light sculpts matter and time seems to stand still.

Technique and Photographic Approach

Each image is taken with long exposures of over two minutes—a technique requiring ND filters to reduce incoming light and allow for extended exposures without overexposure. Choosing the right moment—especially during blue hour or twilight—further enhances the dreamlike quality of the captured scenes.

An Artistic Vision of the Breton Coast

These seascape photographs are more than just snapshots; they are an artistic interpretation of the Breton territory. By balancing frozen and dynamic elements, they invite contemplation and immersion in a world between reality and abstraction.
