The Deauville boardwalk is a timeless symbol of the Normandy coast. This famous wooden promenade along the Deauville beach exudes both elegance and history. In this black and white photograph, I chose a minimalist approach and shallow depth of field to focus the viewer’s gaze on the texture of the wood and the sense of perspective.

Shooting from ground level, nearly eye-to-boardwalk, I aimed to honor the material: these time-worn planks walked by generations of strollers, film stars, and anonymous passersby. The low angle offers a different, almost tactile reading. The selective focus isolates a micro-zone, leaving the rest to dissolve into a dreamlike blur.

This image is part of a formal exploration of line, rhythm, and blur. The vanishing lines lead the eye toward a suggested, nearly surreal horizon. The black and white choice enhances the contrast between the grain of the wood, soft shadows, and the diffused light of a seaside sky. The wood grain becomes almost abstract, like natural calligraphy.

As an architectural and landscape photographer, I often aim to reveal the soul of a place through simple details, refined compositions, and a sensitive approach. In Deauville, the discreet elegance of the boardwalk inspired this image, evoking silence, memory, and contemplation. It belongs to a series that revisits iconic places with an intimate, graphic eye.
