Sebastien Desnoulez shares here a selection of images captured during his second trip to the Dominican Republic in 2019. With tropical beaches, heavy skies and bustling coastal scenes, these photographs provide a sensitive and contrasting view of this Caribbean island — both photogenic and marked by mass tourism.

Despite the idyllic postcard image, it’s rare to find an empty beach in the Dominican Republic. Even off-season, most places remain busy, making it difficult to find untouched landscapes. Yet through his eye for natural atmospheres, Sebastien Desnoulez manages to isolate visual intimacy, playing with light, elements, and composition.

One of the most striking aspects of this destination is the presence of spectacular tropical skies, typical of the Caribbean. Towering cloud formations add drama to the coastal light. The interplay between turquoise waters, white clouds and golden sands creates a rich canvas for atmospheric photography.

The series includes numerous beach scenes with palm trees, sun loungers left behind, and that unique light filtered through the cloud cover. In several shots, the horizon fades into atmospheric blur, evoking heat and shimmering air.

Other images take us into the streets of Santo Domingo, the vibrant capital of the Dominican Republic. Again, the photographer’s approach focuses on low light, shadows and textures. Colorful walls, cobblestone alleys and omnipresent palm trees interact with the sky and passersby to shape a dynamic vision of the city.
