French National Assembly – Heritage Days 2023

16 September 2023   –    Categorie: ,    –    Sebastien Desnoulez

Step inside one of the most iconic institutions of the French Republic. During the 2023 European Heritage Days, I had the privilege of photographing the National Assembly of France—an architectural and political gem usually closed to the public. From the hemicycle to the Hôtel de Lassay, this photographic exploration reveals the elegance and solemnity of a historic site where tradition meets modernity.

The European Heritage Days are always the perfect opportunity to enter exceptional places usually inaccessible to the public. For the 2023 edition, I chose to visit the French National Assembly, a place steeped in history and a symbol of democratic life in France. The organization was smooth, and we entered at the scheduled time, ready to explore this temple of political debate.

A dive into the Hemicycle

From the first steps into the hemicycle, the emotion is palpable. This space—where major decisions for the country are made—impresses with its architecture. The famous Ministerial Bench, covered in red velvet, stands at the heart of the chamber, while the semi-circular tiers surround the room in perfect symmetry. Gold ornaments, columns, and a domed ceiling adorned with frescoes enhance the solemnity of this iconic space.

The majestic Library

Another highlight of the visit was the Library of the National Assembly. This majestic room, designed by Eugène Delacroix, impresses with its frescoes and shelves filled with ancient books. The atmosphere is hushed, almost timeless—ideal for reflection and study. The soft light filtering through the tall windows adds to the solemn aura of this sanctuary of knowledge.

Galerie Morny and the Conference Room

The Galerie Morny, with its tapestries and sparkling chandeliers, embodies the elegance of the 18th century. Its herringbone parquet floor leads the eye toward artworks and period objects that highlight the Assembly’s opulent past. Nearby, the Conference Room shines with its richly decorated ceiling and long tables where important meetings take place. The subdued lighting and luxurious furnishings emphasize its role as a space for strategic dialogue.

Hôtel de Lassay: elegance and prestige

The visit ends at the Hôtel de Lassay, the residence of the President of the National Assembly. This rococo-style palace captivates with its lavishly decorated salons, golden mirrors, and imposing chandeliers. Every room reflects a taste for elegance and prestige. Natural light dances across the gilded details, highlighting the intricate furniture and frescoes.

A contemporary installation for dramatic contrast

Beyond the historical heritage, a contemporary art installation caught my attention in the courtyard of the Assembly. Colored threads stretched skyward formed a temporary artwork that sharply contrasted with the building’s classical architecture. This dialogue between tradition and modernity perfectly illustrates the essence of this place—a site where past and future converge to shape today’s debates.

This visit was a captivating experience, blending history, politics, and art. The French National Assembly is much more than a seat of power—it is a living heritage worth exploring and preserving.
