Greece between memory and light. This photographic journey takes you from the Acropolis of Athens to the cobbled alleys of Hydra, through ruins, dramatic nature, and Mediterranean atmospheres.
Greece is a land where history and nature intertwine, offering majestic and memory-laden landscapes. This trip was an opportunity to explore legendary ancient sites, sunlit towns, and sceneries shaped by time.
Mycenae, dominated by its Acropolis and Cyclopean walls, bears witness to the grandeur of a vanished civilization. The monumental entrance of the Treasury of Atreus, with its massive stone lintel, seems to open a portal to a distant past. Olive trees in the foreground remind us that this land has been inhabited for millennia, shaped by both man and the arid Peloponnesian climate.
At Mycenae, the remains of the walls and the olive trees sketch a harsh, mineral landscape, scorched by the heat. These stones tell a story anchored in the legend of Agamemnon. A little further on, the Gulf of Megara offered a ghostly view veiled by wildfire smoke—a palette of washed-out blues and suspended grays, which I photographed by playing with transparency and layering.
The alleys of Nafplio provide a striking contrast to the ancient sites. Its elegant architecture features colorful façades and greenery-lined stairways. The atmosphere is peaceful, almost frozen in time—ideal for playing with shadows and light. Yet beyond the picturesque charm, a dark veil looms: the wildfire smoke disturbs the clarity of the sky, a sign of the environmental challenges facing the region.
Athens reveals a fascinating balance between ancient ruins and modern urbanism. The restored Stoa of Attalos offers a grand perspective of its rhythmic columns, while the graffitied metro passing by the Agora underscores the coexistence of two eras. The columns of the Acropolis, weathered by time, still stand tall. Through their fluted shafts, the view of the city of Athens reminds us how deeply this site has influenced the world.
Finally, I witnessed the changing of the Evzones in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Their slow, choreographed movements—precisely synchronized—create an almost theatrical scene, full of symbolism. It encapsulates the pride and solemnity of a country with a layered history.
On the small island of Hydra, cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, vibrant bougainvillea, and the absence of motorized vehicles give the town a timeless charm. Here, people travel on foot or by donkey, and cafés shaded by trees invite quiet contemplation. These terraces evoke a slow-paced lifestyle, almost suspended in time.
The Greek landscapes offer a palette of soft tones and sharp contrasts. From the misty morning skies where mountains dissolve into a bluish veil, to the fiery sunsets behind rolling hills, every moment is magnified by light. The shifting atmosphere is also marked by weather whims: a distant storm casts spectacular curtains of rain on the horizon, adding drama to this land of myths and legends.
This journey through Greece was a sensory and visual exploration, where every photographed place tells a story. Between the brilliance of ancient stone, the Mediterranean softness of Hydra and Nafplio, and the intensity of the natural elements, these images are an invitation to contemplate a country where past and present are in constant dialogue.
