The “Caterpillar” of the Centre Pompidou – Light and Motion in Paris Architecture
Discover a futuristic architectural icon in the heart of Paris. This photo series captures the Caterpillar of the Centre Georges Pompidou, a tubular escalator suspended above the city. From natural daylight to nighttime neon lines, each image highlights the dynamic perspectives, reflections, and energy of this landmark structure designed by Renzo Piano.
The Caterpillar—a spectacular stretch of escalators and transparent walkways—runs along the facade of the Centre Georges Pompidou, guiding visitors through its six levels. As an architectural signature of the building, it offers a unique visual and sensory experience.
During the day, the tubular structure captures natural light, reflecting the sky and nearby buildings. At dusk, the mood shifts dramatically. The glowing red LED handrails and white arches turn the Caterpillar into a futuristic tunnel, enhanced by light effects and long-exposure photography.
Ascending the Caterpillar is an immersive experience, where dynamic perspectives and reflections enhance the sense of motion and speed. This effect is amplified in long exposures, capturing light trails from LEDs and the blurred silhouettes of passing people.
Without a ticket, visitors can freely access the panoramic gallery on the 5th floor and continue to the Georges restaurant on the 6th floor, offering one of the best rooftop views of Paris.
