It’s impossible to speak of Venice without picturing its canals lined with palaces, gondolas gliding on water, and legendary bridges like the Bridge of Sighs or the Rialto Bridge. In this series of photographs, I invite you on a visual stroll through La Serenissima, captured at different times of day—from golden clarity to poetic mist and dramatic backlighting.
Venetian icons elevated
From the top of the St. Mark’s Campanile, the view over Punta della Dogana, Giudecca and the Basilica Santa Maria della Salute evokes a glorious past bathed in light. Gondolas moored in front of Piazza San Marco or aligned beside the Doge’s Palace become witnesses to a centuries-old ritual, which I chose to capture in black and white to highlight their timeless elegance.
The Rialto Bridge emerges dramatically along the Grand Canal, its stone mass animated by the constant traffic of boats. A striking view through the Bridge of Sighs reveals the lagoon and the peaceful silhouettes of San Giorgio Maggiore, reinforcing the contrast between prison history and vaporous freedom.
Contrasted ambiences and architectural details
Venice reveals itself in subtle details: a flowered Gothic window at a palace corner, a giant crab sculpture floating in front of the Natural History Museum at the start of acqua alta, a glowing tree in a hotel courtyard in Cannaregio, or a saint’s statue framed by columns in Santa Maria della Salute. I aimed to reveal the contrast between monumental splendor and poetic everyday life.
Inside, the Chiesa dei Gesuiti impresses with its twisted columns and black-and-white marble contrasts, while the gilded ceilings of the Accademia showcase Venice’s pictorial wealth. Every ornament, every light play on sculptures and mosaics tells a story.
The Grand Canal, lifeline of the city
Crossed by gondolas, vaporettos, and elegant mahogany water taxis, the Grand Canal pulses with Venice’s energy. From Santa Maria della Salute toward the Accademia, palazzo facades compete in elegance. A view from the Salute reveals the ebb and flow of boats against a backdrop of baroque silhouettes. I captured this vibrant rhythm at sunrise and sunset, in color or black and white depending on the mood.
Intimate Venice, lived-in Venice
Beyond monuments, it’s the courtyards of Dorsoduro or Hotel Eureka, the narrow Cannaregio alleys, the laundry hanging between buildings, the empty benches in a garden—these evoke Venice’s quiet charm. Away from the crowds, these suspended moments portray a more silent, deeply human side of the city. The serene colors of Burano island extend this intimate atmosphere, blending dazzling light with everyday poetry.
Photographing Venice means trying to capture the intangible: the emotion born of raking light, an elusive reflection, or a fleeting gesture. It’s about telling the story of an eternal city, suspended between water and stone, between dream and reality.
