Bonifacio – Photographic Journey through Light, Shadows and Limestone Cliffs
Limestone cliffs, narrow streets, shadows and blazing sunlight — this photo series reveals the graphic and raw beauty of Bonifacio, Corsica’s southernmost town.
Bonifacio, perched on its wind-sculpted white limestone cliffs, offers a spectacular setting between sky and sea. During my stay in August 2020, I wandered through its narrow alleys, steep stairways, and hidden coves. This photo reportage invites you to immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Bonifacio — a blend of sharp light, Mediterranean architecture, and untamed nature.
The series begins with one of my favorite images: a black and white view of the marine cemetery, marked by powerful contrasts and graphic composition. The shadows of the crosses on the ground, the dazzling white walls, and the bold architectural lines create a timeless scene reminiscent of the visual universe of Henri Cartier-Bresson. This image was awarded the Public Choice Prize – Architecture at the reFocus Awards 2025. The cemetery overlooks the sea, offering a breathtaking view of Bonifacio’s cliffs.
The following images explore the contrast between rugged landscapes — like the chalky cliffs of southern Corsica — and the intimacy of the old town’s narrow streets, with weathered façades, discreet stairways, and shuttered windows. I also captured unusual details: an old sign, a slightly ajar door — silent witnesses to the town’s soul.
This photographic walk pays tribute to the raw beauty of Bonifacio, combining shadow play, architectural geometry, and infinite horizons. A suspended moment between Corsican light and visual poetry.
