Located on the island’s southern coast, Cienfuegos stands out for its unique architectural heritage in Cuba. Founded by French settlers, this Caribbean city enchants with its urban symmetry, elegant buildings, and peaceful atmosphere—far from the bustle of Havana. Sebastien Desnoulez’s photographs offer an intimate immersion into this human-scaled city, where culture, color and history coexist in harmony.
The journey begins beneath the iconic arch of Parque José Martí, a historical monument built in 1902 to celebrate the Cuban Republic’s independence. A red vintage American car is parked beneath the neoclassical arch, creating a striking contrast between architecture and color. The scene evokes a bygone era still vividly alive in the streets of Cienfuegos.
Another photo shows the arch from a side angle, highlighting the elegant alignment of nearby colonial buildings. The presence of palm trees and cast-iron lampposts enhances the urban character typical of Caribbean colonial cities. A blue sky scattered with clouds accentuates the dazzling whiteness of the facades.
