Calanques de Piana – Photographs of Corsican Landscapes in Light and Shadow
Crimson cliffs, perched villages and Mediterranean vegetation — this photo series from Corsica takes you through the Calanques de Piana, where sea, rock and golden light come together.
Corsica unveils a rich variety of landscapes where steep cliffs, hilltop villages and turquoise beaches coexist. At the heart of this spectacular setting, the Calanques de Piana fascinate with their wind-carved rock formations glowing red in the golden light of evening. The shadows dancing on the stone emphasize the contrasts between mineral and vegetation. Also discover my photo series from Bonifacio, further south.
Nearby, pine forests descend into dense vegetation. Light filters between the trunks, revealing the textures of bark and the depth of green tones. Perched on the heights, the village of Piana clings to the mountain; its stone houses and ochre roofs echo the island’s traditional architecture. Each building seems to blend into the slope, forming a harmonious ensemble with the rugged terrain.
Further along, seascapes open onto a warm-lit horizon. The jagged coastline reveals hidden coves, wild inlets and plunging cliffs. At sunset, the silhouette of the mountains emerges in a soft mist that blurs the lines and envelops the scene in tranquility.
Corsica’s natural diversity is everywhere: maritime pines, eucalyptus, jagged rocks and crystal-clear waters come together in a unique visual symphony. The church of a nearby village, standing proudly at the foot of the mountains, marks the presence of humans in this wild setting. Chiuni beach, with its shallow turquoise waters, provides a striking contrast with the surrounding rugged reliefs.
