During the 2022 European Heritage Days, I had the privilege of visiting the Élysée Palace, the official residence of the President of France. A long line of visitors wound through the gardens, but the opportunity to explore this iconic site steeped in history was well worth the wait.
From the magnificent ballroom to ceremonial salons and presidential offices, the tour offered an exceptional glimpse behind the scenes of the French presidency. The contrast between the palace’s classical architecture and its touches of contemporary design—modern art and signature furniture by renowned French designers—emphasized the delicate balance between tradition and modernity.
One of the most striking spaces was the futuristic dining room designed by Pierre Paulin in the 1970s. Built as a self-supporting structure that can be dismantled without damaging the historic walls, it features curved furniture, graphic carpets, and sculptural ceilings made of thousands of rods—an immersive cocoon of design in stark contrast to the palace’s classical grandeur. A bold gesture that reflected President Georges Pompidou’s desire to modernize the image of power.
Through my photographs, I aimed to capture the architectural beauty, unique details, and the special atmosphere of this rarely accessible place. This series is part of my broader focus on Parisian architectural heritage, as seen in my article on Marguerite de Navarre Gate.
