Fujifilm GFX medium format equivalence in 24x36 / Full Frame
Fujifilm GFX cameras use a 43.8 x 32.9mm medium-format sensor, larger than the 24x36mm sensor found in Full Frame cameras. To compare focal lengths, framing and depth of field between the two formats, a conversion factor of approximately 0.79x must be applied.
A 50mm lens mounted on a Fujifilm GFX therefore provides an angle of view comparable to that of a 40mm lens on a 24x36 camera. Similarly, a lens opened to f/2.8 produces, with identical framing, a depth of field close to that of a lens opened to f/2.2 on Full Frame.
This equivalence does not, however, alter either the actual aperture or the amount of light reaching the sensor. A GF 45mm f/2.8 remains a lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 for exposure purposes.

Fujifilm GFX sensor format
Current Fujifilm GFX cameras use a CMOS sensor measuring 43.8 x 32.9mm. Its native width-to-height ratio is 4:3, whereas the 24x36mm sensor uses a 3:2 ratio.

The GFX sensor therefore has a surface area approximately 1.67 times larger than that of a 24x36 sensor. It does not, however, correspond to the former 6 x 4.5cm, 6 x 6cm or 6 x 7cm film formats, which had a considerably larger surface area.
Fujifilm uses the term medium format because the GFX sensor is larger than 24x36, although it is sometimes described as “compact medium format” to distinguish it from the 53.4 x 40mm sensors used in some digital backs.
Fujifilm GFX and Full Frame conversion factor
The conversion factor is calculated by comparing the diagonal of the 24x36 sensor with that of the GFX sensor:
43.3 ÷ 54.8 = 0.79
To determine the 24x36 equivalent of a Fujifilm GF focal length, simply multiply the focal length by 0.79.
Examples:
- a GF 23mm frames like an approximately 18mm lens on 24x36;
- a GF 45mm frames like a 36mm;
- a GF 63mm frames like a 50mm;
- a GF 110mm frames like an 87mm;
- a GF 250mm frames like a 198mm.
Depth-of-field equivalence
The same conversion factor can be applied to the aperture when comparing depth of field at the same framing and shooting distance.

This conversion only concerns the appearance of depth of field. For exposure, a lens opened to f/4 remains an f/4 lens: it transmits the amount of light associated with that aperture, regardless of sensor size.
Fujifilm GFX camera range
The current Fujifilm GFX photography range includes two 102-megapixel interchangeable-lens cameras and one fixed-lens compact camera. All of them use a 43.8 x 32.9mm sensor with a native 4:3 ratio.

Fujifilm GFX100 II
The GFX100 II is the most comprehensive model in the range. Its 102-megapixel CMOS II HS sensor is paired with the X-Processor 5. It features a removable electronic viewfinder, phase-detection autofocus, in-body stabilisation rated at up to eight stops and a continuous shooting speed of up to eight frames per second.
It also stands out for its advanced video capabilities, including 8K recording, and for its dual-card storage system combining a CFexpress Type B card with an SD UHS-II card.
This camera is particularly well suited to studio photography, landscapes, architecture, portraits, artwork reproduction and demanding video productions.
Fujifilm GFX100S II
The GFX100S II uses a sensor with the same resolution in a smaller and lighter body. It retains in-body stabilisation rated at up to eight stops, phase-detection autofocus and recognition of several different subject types.
Its continuous shooting speed reaches seven frames per second and its weight remains below 900g with battery and memory card. For landscape, travel, architecture and posed portrait photography, it provides most of the image quality of the GFX100 II at an official retail price €2,500 lower.
Fujifilm GFX100RF
The GFX100RF differs from the other two cameras through its fixed GF 35mm f/4 lens. This focal length provides an angle of view comparable to a 28mm lens on 24x36, with depth of field close to that of an f/3.2 lens on Full Frame.
Its lens incorporates a leaf shutter allowing flash synchronisation at all available shutter speeds, as well as a built-in four-stop neutral-density filter. In return, the GFX100RF does not feature in-body mechanical stabilisation.
At 735g, it is the lightest GFX camera. It is mainly intended for travel, landscape, architecture, documentary and street photography.
Fujifilm GF lenses and their 24x36 equivalents
Fujinon GF lenses are designed to cover the 43.8 x 32.9mm sensor used by GFX cameras. The photography range includes prime lenses, zooms, macro lenses, long focal lengths and two tilt-shift lenses.

The teleconverter is primarily intended for use with the GF 100-200mm, GF 250mm and GF 500mm. With the teleconverter attached, the GF 500mm reaches an actual focal length of 700mm, although its angle of view corresponds to that of an approximately 553mm lens on a Full Frame camera.
Which focal lengths should you choose for a Fujifilm GFX?
For landscape and architecture
The GF 20-35mm f/4 covers the equivalent of a 16-28mm lens and is the most versatile zoom for landscapes, interiors and architecture. The GF 23mm f/4 provides framing close to that of an 18mm lens, while the GF 30mm f/5.6 T/S allows perspective to be corrected directly in-camera.
For travel
The GF 35-70mm f/4.5-5.6 is the lightest GF zoom, weighing 390g. It corresponds to a 28-55mm lens on 24x36. Combined with the GFX100S II, it creates a kit weighing approximately 1.27kg.
The GF 50mm f/3.5 is another compact solution. Its angle of view is equivalent to that of a 40mm lens, and the complete kit with the GFX100S II weighs approximately 1.22kg.
For portrait photography
The GF 80mm f/1.7 approximately corresponds to a 63mm f/1.3 lens in terms of depth of field. It is suitable for environmental portraits and relatively wide compositions.
The GF 110mm f/2 provides the framing of an 87mm lens, with depth of field comparable to that of an approximately f/1.6 85mm lens on a Full Frame camera. It is the most iconic portrait lens in the GFX range.
For general photography

For telephoto photography
The GF 100-200mm f/5.6 corresponds to a 79-158mm lens. It remains relatively compact for a medium-format zoom, although its focal-length range is narrower than that of a 70-200mm lens designed for 24x36.
The GF 250mm f/4 frames like a 198mm lens, while the GF 500mm f/5.6 corresponds to a 396mm lens. The latter allows the GFX system to be used for wildlife photography, although autofocus performance, burst rates and the choice of long focal lengths remain more favourable in 24x36 systems designed specifically for action photography.
